And The First Game For PSN Online Pass Is…..

Rumors are circulating that Sony is considering an “online pass” scheme (a one-time use code for online play to ship inside the retail version of the game) for Resistance 3. The rumors stem from an image of the European Resistance 3 hardware bundle unearthed by websiteKonsolentreff.net. That image features the phrase “PSN Pass.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed the program, calling it the company’s version of “Online Pass” or “Project Ten Dollar” used by several third party publishers such as EA, Sega, and THQ.

These one-time-use programs enable online play for the original purchaser. Anyone buying the game new will have to purchase a new code via the PlayStation Store.

“This program will be game-specific,” an unnamed Sony rep said. “Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.” The initiative is intended to “accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”

Sony later clarified its statement, saying that it was a joint SCEE/SCEA statement, meaning that the same program was applicable to North America and Europe.

“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities. This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
